Student Employment Verification Changes

In April 27, 2023, UCPath sent an email to student employees with the following information.

On April 30, the University of California will begin using The Work Number, or TWN, to verify employment for student employees. TWN is an automated service that provides a fast and secure way for entities, such as banks, leasing agents and employers, to verify your UC employment or income. Student employees will no longer need to contact UCPath for employment verification.

Can I opt out?

If you do not wish to use TWN for employment verification effective April 30, you may opt out beginning April 28 via Employee Self-Service on UCPath online:

UCPath Online > Employee Actions > Personal Information > My Current Profile > Employment Verification

  • Opt-out before 5pm April 30; Your UC employment information will not be shared with The Work Number
  • Opt-out after 11:59 p.m. April 30; Your UC employment information will be removed from the file sent to The Work Number within one business day. Information sent to The Work Number prior to opting out will remain in its database

Employees who opt out must refer all verifiers to UCPath for manual employment and income verifications.

Manage your data

As an employee, you can access and manage your employment and income data stored in The Work Number database by creating an account. This will give you access to the following self-service options:

  • View Your Data: Get instant and private access to your Employment Data Report. Review your information in The Work Number database and see who has obtained your information in the past two years
  • Dispute Your Data: If you’re concerned that the information in your report may be incomplete or inaccurate, you can dispute the information under the Fair Credit Reporting Act
  • Freeze Your Data: You can help prevent access to your data by requesting a freeze on your information in The Work Number database at any time

How is my data kept secure?

The Work Number system is designed to keep your private work information safe by checking the ID of anyone requesting access to your information to ensure they are authorized. In addition, requestors must provide a password to access the system and show that they have permission to see your information and a valid reason for accessing it.

When required to prove that you are employed by the University of California, you must give consent to the verifying agency by providing UC’s employer code,15975. The Work Number will only disclose data in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) regulations.
